Short Distance vs Long Distance Firearms

The Correct Tool

The most accurate preface to such a multifaceted topic is this: different tools are used for different jobs. The terms and intricacies of distance shooting in general are relative to the specific needs concerning the tasks at hand. This isn’t limited to the firearm. In general, any caliber ammunition that is good for long distance is generally good for close proximity targets when over penetration is not a cautionary factor. However, anything good for short distance, particularly subsonic ammunition, is not necessarily good for long distance applications.

With so many variables, where do you start? How do you find the right tool?

What is your mission?

What is your goal?

Answering these questions helps you determine what caliber and firearm you need to complete your engagement task and accomplish your objective.

There are many variables that surface in these answers. But starting your general thought process with ‘what is your mission, what is your goal’  and working backward from there will get the answers you need and ultimately your required tools.

KelTec Recommendations

There are a few KelTec recommendations in general for both long and short distance shooting.

Long distance for a long gun is far different than the long distance requirements of a pistol. But these KelTec options are reliable and powerful tools for you to choose from. It all depends on your hunting, personal defense, varmint extermination or recreational shooting goals.

Long Guns (Carbines)

Long Distance

RFB 24 (with proper scope)

This bullpup rifle is currently the longest range tool in the KelTec family. The RFB is a truly ambidextrous 7.62 NATO offering that is well-balanced, ultra compact and accurate. Thanks to its innovative forward ejection system, dual bolt release, left & right side safety levers and ambi magazine release, southpaws can enjoy this little powerhouse as much as the rest of us.

Short Distance (CQB, CQC)

SUB2000

Offered in 9mm or .40cal. Folded, it tucks away nicely in situations where space is limited, but it’s quick to deploy in situations where time is of the essence. The Sub2000 is also compatible with several different, popular pistol magazines.

Pistols

Long Distance

CP33

Equipped with a Picatinny-style top rail and a MAGPUL® ‎M-LOK® slot built into the dust cover, the CP33 is ready to accept your favorite optics and accessories. Train, compete, plink and repeat. If you’d like to do it quietly, simply attach your favorite .22 suppressor.

Short Distance

P32

One of the smallest semi-automatic center-fire pistols in the world. Its small size combined with modern ammunition technology and 8-round capacity, the P32 works just as hard as any other concealed carry pistol on the market.

Find The Firearm You Need

As a general rule of thumb for a firearm’s distance capabilities, the shorter the barrel, the shorter the range. Also keep in mind, the maximum effectiveness at longer distances for a pistol caliber firearm are far different from a long distance shot from a rifle caliber platform.

What is your mission? What is your goal?

Finding the right tool for what you need is wholly dependent on what you are trying to achieve. Whether you’re going plinking or dialing in longer distance shooting, there is a KelTec firearm for your needs.
